What is the Muskoka Watershed Council?

MWC was formed to educate our community on environmental issues, provide science-based environmental policy advice, and help address watershed management issues.

Please check us out at muskokawatershed.org

What do we do?

Our activities are multi-focused with a particular emphasis on:

–          Integrated Watershed Management that offers a substantially more effective form of environmental management at the watershed scale through effective collaboration with everyone.

–          Algae monitoring program that was developed to collect information on toxic blue-green algae blooms in particular, across lakes in the watershed.

–          Muskoka Watershed Report Card is produced every five years, scientifically assessing the health of the watershed and educating residents and decision-makers.

–          Community Engagement through conferences, and public lectures, presentations, monthly newsletters, weekly blogs, media articles and social media posts.

–          Managing the Doug Cross Stewardship Recognition Program as a means of encouraging public participation in caring for our environment.

Why do we need a volunteer Communications Director?

The Muskoka Watershed Council is a volunteer driven organization with a mandate to communicate critical information on the health of our environment with all stakeholders in our community.

While MWC has part-time administrative support, and has received a great deal of paid assistance with our website, blogs, promotion, and social media, it is critical that we drive the messaging.

A volunteer Communication Director would become a member of the Board of Directors, planning and executing all messaging with the support of the board while striving to engage membership in supporting this role.

Are you the volunteer we are looking for?

MWC is looking for someone with a background in communications, and or marketing, who has an interest in helping to support our environment by working with our successful environmental not-for-profit with a 25 year track record.

Skills sets needed would include

–           A monthly commitment to the organization save for December and August.

–          Ability to communicate with a broad audience.

–          Comfortable using social media platforms.

–          Ability to impart technical information to the general public thus breaking down communication barriers.
